Knowing your business
You know your business better than anyone. But have your thought about the words your potential clients type when searching for your type of business? It’s important because having good keywords in your copy will help get your website on to page one of Google.
One thing is for sure – more and more people are finding businesses from Internet searches. Your website is the way that your prospective customers first find you. What you write on your website is paramount to whether they find you or your competitor. You need to make sure that your webpages have keywords that your potential customers are typing in.
TIP: It’s all very well to write succinct, on-topic and thought-provoking copy but if no one is reading it, then it’s a lot of work for no result.
How do you know what keywords people are searching?
Think about what you might search if you were trying to find your business. Write the keywords down.
Now do a web search of some of these terms to see if you come up on page one for that keyword search. If you don’t show on page one, read on.
How to write your web copy that attracts more visitors
Firstly, every webpage on your website and every new page you add has the ability to attract more visitors so when writing content, work on each page as its own entity. A page about web development should have some well searched key terms about web development (and not other services and other unrelated information).
Now use a free online tool such as Google Keywords Tool to see what words and terms are commonly searched. When you search your terms, you’ll see some big hitters. Ignore these and look for second tier keywords – these are the best to use in your copy.
TIP: Make sure the Advanced Search section of Google Keywords Tool is set on ‘Australia’.
Here’s an example for using keywords in your web writing
Let’s look at web development. ‘Web development’ is too big a term with too much competition to get you on page one (33100 Australian searches last month), however terms such as ‘professional web development’ (390 Australian searches last month) give you more chance of making page one of Google.
Now that you have a specific term to work with on your webpage, write the content for the page in the voice of your company and writing about how you deliver professional web development services.
This is when you need to be succinct. Bullet point lists for how you can help provide professional web development makes for easy reading.
By focusing on keywords that people use to find you, you are improving your engine optimisation (SEO) that helps push your website to the top of the results page (page one of Google and other search engines). What your write still needs to grab the visitors’ attention quickly.
Don’t forget that bad copy can be an instant turn-off. You don’t want your new visitors heading straight off your website to competitors.
Think about getting a professional to write copy
There’s the path of getting someone who can write good website copy and who understands how to research and incorporate keywords properly into the copy. BTW, if you are in need of a web writer, contact Balmain Website Designs for a quote: we have professional writers on staff. Call 0410 037 635 and speak to Sue.
If you decide to go the distance of writing regular copy yourself (you need to do this once a month minimum), consider hiring a professional editor or proofreader who can help make sure that the copy reads well and has no mistakes. Again, Balmain Website Designs can provide editing and proofreading of your web copy.
The additional advantage of hiring an editor/proofreader is that that person can critically read the copy and pick up any industry jargon that might be unclear.
One last point about writing good web copy
Whether you write the copy yourself or hire a professional, it is important to connect with your audience, be honest, keep it interesting and to the point.
