Before you start writing content for your new webpage, the first thing you should do is go to Google’s external keywords tool and find out what words your prospective visitors are searching.

How to start a keyword search on Google Keyword External Tool

Go to the webpage: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Enter some words that you think people will search for – make sure that the keywords are relevant to the content you intend to write. This will improve your website traffic because the words you are going to use in your content are words that people use when searching for this information.

Go to Advanced Options and Filters

Select the appropriate country and language. If you are an Australian country, use the drop down menu to find Australia.

You can also filter by device and type of search. The Google Keyword External Tool is set for Local Monthly Search which is a good search to do.

Type in the security words

You will need to decipher the security word or words which isn’t the easiest thing to do. However, if you get it wrong, Google will give you another to try.

Shortly you will see a long list of keywords with a large range of variations of the keywords you entered in your search.

You are looking for second-level keywords that have good monthly searches but not hundreds of thousands. You want to choose keywords that you have a chance of ranking highly on.

Choose the best keywords

For your immediate article or webpage, choose one, two or three related keywords at the most. You can then use these in the Title Tag for the webpage, in Headings 1 and 2 in variations, in your body text and in ALT text for images.

To keep a record of the results while you plan your website content, you can download the keywords results very easily.

You can select the relevant keywords and only download them or download the entire list.
